Monday Blues!! Yeah Right.. That is exactly what I didn't had when I reached office on 08/11/2008. A certain Abhinav Bindra was taking his last shot and all of us were keeping our fingers crossed. Will this be the day or like Athens 2004, we will miss it by a whisker.
When Mr. Bindra hit the bulls eye, for a minute I couldn't believe it. Was this the moment I had cherished for? Or was it too true to be true. Not that I didn't had faith in the 56 odd representatives at Beijing. Remember in Manchester (2002) & Melbourne (2006), we were fourth behind Australia, England & Canada. After Olympics, Commonwealth Games is the largest sporting event with about 70+ countries participating in it.
Someone told me a fortnight back, that we might get that "odd" medal by some unknown sportsperson. Mr. Bindra doesn't belong to this category for sure. Having proved his metal in the past in World Championship & Commonwealth Games, Olympics was exactly the kind of stage he was looking to set on fire.
In the last 4 Years, Indian shooters have come of age. Earlier they were in awe of there European counterparts, but now its the other way around. Last time around, both Mr. Rathore & Ahmed (UAE) were competing for the Gold Medal in the double trap event. Coincidentally, it was Ahmed's first medal for UAE and it could have been the 1st gold medal for India in an indivisual event.
Is this triumph better than that of 1983? Yes & No. Yes, because of the infrastructure facilities available to the sportsperson of our country. A place were dilpomats & VIP's are given better treatment. A place were the funds are not able to reach at the grass root level. A place which has more than 1.1 Billion inhabitants. And NO, because the Olympics have more than 300 events and an indivisual brilliance once in four years can make the "Golden" dream possible.
